Jio leads in the combined 4G/5G users category, holding a 51% market share, while Airtel has 31%, Vi has 14%, and BSNL has 4%. According to company reports, in the quarter ending September 2024, Jio had 148 million 5G users while Airtel had 105 million. Vi has not yet introduced 5G networks.

Based on Trai data, in September, Jio saw a decrease of 60 basis points in market share among data subscribers, while Airtel gained 25bps, BSNL/MTNL gained 20bps, and Vi gained 10bps. A basis point is equivalent to 0.01 percent.

During the month of July, Jio, Airtel, and Vi, the three private carriers, increased their headline rates by 11% to 25%. Jio, a leading telecom firm, the top player in the market, has taken the initiative to boost average revenue per user (ARPU) since they have not yet begun to make money from 5G services. This is crucial as they have made significant investments in acquiring airwaves and establishing a nationwide 5G network.

Heavy losses of 4G and 5G users from Reliance Jio due to recent tariff increases caused a significant decrease in India's mobile broadband user base in September, marking the first drop since the introduction of 5G services in October 2022 after two years of continuous growth.

According to Trai's latest subscriber data, India experienced a significant decrease in its mobile broadband user base to 901 million in September, with a record drop of 5.6 million in its 4G-cum-5G user base. The number of users increased from 790 million in October 2022 to approximately 906 million in August 2024.
